Stunning views in Laurie Lee's Slad Valley

From North/West London the best route is A40 / M40 (leave junction 8 towards Oxford and Cheltenham). Take the A436 towards Gloucester, then follow signs to Birdlip. At the Air Balloon roundabout take the A417 towards Cirencester for half a mile before turning right to Birdlip. As you enter Birdlip follow the road round to the right, then turn sharp left on the B4070 to Stroud (don't miss this left, just after the George pub). Follow this road for 6 miles into Slad. 200 metres into the village The Old Chapel is set back on the right, just as the road narrows and bends. Pull into the car park behind the drystone wall. 

From South/West London take the M4 to junction 15. Follow the A419 to Cirencester, then to Stroud. In Stroud follow signs to A46 Cheltenham, pass over two consecutive mini roundabouts, and at third mini roundabout take the 2nd exit to Slad and Birdlip (B4070). As you enter Slad, go past The Woolpack pub and The Old Chapel is a further 300 metres on the left side, set back from the road, just as the road narrows and bends. Pull into the car park behind the drystone wall. 

From the M5 South, exit at junction 13, and take A419 to Stroud. In Stroud, take 1st exit on roundabout to A46 (Cheltenham/Gloucester), go past cinema and at next roundabout take 2nd exit to Slad and Birdlip (B4070). Two miles later you enter Slad, go past The Woolpack pub for 300 metres and The Old Chapel is set back from the road on the left side, just as the road narrows and bends. Pull into the car park behind the drystone wall. 

From the M5 North, exit at junction 11a, A417 towards Cirencester. Half a mile after Air Balloon roundabout, turn right to Birdlip. In Birdlip, follow the road round to the right, then just after the pub, take a sharp left - this is the B4070 to Slad. As you enter Slad, The Old Chapel is set back on the right just as the road narrows and bends. Pull into the car park behind the drystone wall. 

By rail, the nearest mainline station is also in Stroud. London Paddington takes 1 hour 38 mins. Birmingham is 1 hour 25mins. Slad is two miles from Stroud station. Taxis are available.
